Barley Water Chestnut Drink

When we go out for meals at stirfry restaurants, my family would usually order one of these two drinks: Chinese tea or barley drink.  I don’t know why we never selected anything else but we almost always settle for one of these two.

Like Chinese tea, barley drink is pretty common at every single restaurant we go to. It’s purported to be good for cooling down the body and once a doctor said it helps with cleansing the system. There is a whole host of goodness in barley. if you are interested, you can read more here!

And so with the weather going a little wonky these days, I decided to prepare some for hubs and I. It’s so simple, you barely have to do much besides dump, simmer and drink.

To increase it’s nutritional benefits, I added extra ingredients, namely:

Barley, Water Chestnut, Jujube (Red Dates), Pandan Leaves, Sugar

The water chestnut gets peeled and everything is placed into a pot filled with water.

After a good simmering, we get a good dose of cooling, thirst-quenching beverage. I’d recommend giving it a good squeeze of lime. Nothing better than barli limau on a hot day.

It’s such a simple drink yet bursting with nutrition. Try it and let me know how you like it.

PS: It’s 12/12/12 today! And if you notice, I decided to post this at 12:12pm. haha… just to be funny :-P. Have a great week ahead!

  1. Love this recipe! Most people would make water chestnut and sugar cane drink so I really like this alternative version you shared. Thanks!

    • Thanks for your approval, Ruth! Both sugar cane and barley drinks really benefit from the addition of water chestnut. So very refreshing.
